Before we discuss a diet for gestational diabetes, let us discuss what is gestational diabetes is. Gestational diabetes is also known as gestational diabetes mellitus and is a form of diabetes that only pregnant women get. If a women gets diabetes when she is pregnant, but never had it before, then she this is gestational diabetes. This gestational diabetes affects 5 percent of all pregnant women or approximately 200,000 yearly in the United States. Your physician will typically test you at about 28 weeks of pregnancy for this diabetes.

Now that you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes what do you do? Your blood sugar will need to be tested on a regular basis. You will need to change what you eat to keep your glucose levels where they need to be. Some great ideas for foods to eat while you are pregnant with gestational diabetes are peanut butter on whole what toast or half a banana or a small handful of blueberries with some nuts preferable lean nuts like almonds, or even egg and toast when you are in a rush.

For lunch you could pick fresh veggies and turkey with a small piece of fruit. You might consider wheat wraps at lunch, as they are filling and hold all kinds of foods. Chicken is another great way to give you the protein you need while staying in the guidelines. For dinner you could have steak or fish and veggies. Keep the limited number of carbohydrates you are allowed in mind when planning your meals. Your doctor will go over a detailed plan of exactly how much of each you can have.

Make sure you do not go over the amount of carbohydrates you are allowed in your diet plan to keep you on track so that you do not undo everything you are working for.

Although having gestational diabetes is not ideal and not what you had planned when you decided to be come pregnant, it is survivable. Keeping up a good diet plan will also benefit you after the baby comes when you are trying to lose that baby weight. You will already be in the healthy diet mode.
