If you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes you will also
need a gestational diabetes diet plan. This can be a challenge.
Gestational diabetes is also known as gestational diabetes mellitus
and is a form of diabetes that only pregnant women get. If a women
gets diabetes when she is pregnant, but never had it before, this is
gestational diabetes. This gestational diabetes affects 5 percent of
all pregnant women or approximately 200,000 yearly in the United
States. Your physician will typically test you at about 28 weeks of
pregnancy for this diabetes.
Now that you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes you will
need to come up with a gestational diabetes diet plan. This is
something that your doctor will give you a lot of good information on.
Turning that information into something that is workable for your
situation may take a little practice.
Breakfast is so very important. You want to be sure to start that
off right. If you start out the day wrong it may cause your blood
sugar to be completely off and that will set the tone for the day. In
an effort to keep your blood sugar on track and keep yourself
satisfied, try something for breakfast like whole wheat toast and a
bit of natural peanut butter (a tablespoon full). You could also grab
a half of a banana and a small hand full of nuts if you are in a huge
hurry. Typically, an egg on toast is allowed as well. Stay with the
proteins that will push you through the day.
Lunch is no less of a challenge. Most of us live in a fast world
and lunch is no different. You will want to pick foods that are easy
and yet within your diet range. One great idea is turkey and a
vegetable (lettuce and tomato maybe) in a whole wheat wrap.
Dinner is a little easier. Go for the high protein low carb foods
such as steak and fish. Great grilled or baked. Some vegetables and
some kind of small starch like potato on the side. You will be
allowed a certain amount of carbs with the diet. Just be careful not
to go over.
Be creative and see how many different things you can do within
your new limits. Remember these habits will go with you after the
baby is born and may even be great when you gear up to lose the baby
weight. You will already be adjusted to healthy eating.
